Intercessional Meeting of the International Advisory Meeting on Biosafety and Biosecurity “Risk Assessment for Human and Animal Pathogens”, International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID), 26-27 June
The meeting was opened by Terry Duguid, President and CEO of the International Center of Infectious Diseases, and Yuri Remnev, TEMPO Deputy Executive Director. The need to more intensively pursue intercessional activities was identified as a key priority at the October 2007 meeting of the International Advisory Group (IAG). The group encouraged productive intercessional work through scientist-to-scientist cooperation on topics with a clear focus which reflected both the priorities of the functional sub-groups established in the IAG’s Terms of Reference and current Russian and international interests. The IAG agreed that a major theme for the coming year should be to strengthen the links between animal and human health organisations and activities.
In keeping with this theme, a proposal was submitted by the International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID), a new Canadian member, to hold an intercessional meeting at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health (CSCHAH) in Winnipeg, Canada, where this subject could be further explored and a subsequent programme of work set out.
With support from Canada’s Global Partnership Program, the ICID, in collaboration with the Office of Biorisk Management at the CSCHAH, hosted an intercessional IAG meeting June 26-27, 2008. This workshop, focused on human and animal health biosafety/biosecurity risk assessment, will enable the IAG to focus its strategy in 2008 to reflect current IAG priorities. Specifically, the workshop covered the following key topics:
· Laboratory Biorisk Management Standard
· Biosecurity Risk Assessment Methodology for Human and Animal Health Laboratories
· Biosafety Risk Assessment Methodology for Human and Animal Health Pathogens
· Biosafety/Biosecurity Risk Assessment Website
Topic 1: CEN Laboratory Biorisk Management Standard CWA 15793
CEN Standard was discussed and it was proposed to set up the pilot project in Russian institutes as a new CEN Standard implementation initiative.
Topic 2 Implementation of Biosecurity and Biosafety Risk Assessment Methodologies
Topic 3 BS/BS Risk Assessment Website
